Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Research training

UCSD prides itself in research, as well as clinical excellence. Most of the clinical training programs here reflect that emphasis. In that regard, the UCSD Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program has the special requirement of a one-year research fellowship to be completed after the general surgery internship. This experience is in addition to the regular clinical training.

The research year may consist of clinical or basic research. The resident has input into planning as well as performing projects for the research year. The lab year emphasizes understanding of basic medical science research techniques, learning how to critically analyze/evaluate articles, and applying statistical methods to assist in clinical, as well as research outcomes and papers.
