Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Research Year

Residents take one year of basic or clinical orthopaedic research following their general surgery intern year. A variety of opportunities are available for residents in different areas of research.

The research facilities for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery are maintained at the Medical Teaching Facility on the School of Medicine campus at UCSD, UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, Rady Children's Hospital - San Diego, and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in La Jolla. Sophisticated tools and techniques are available in these labs for bioengineering, physiology, biochemical, hard and soft tissue morphology, tissue culture, and bioengineering.

Core laboratories within the Department include anatomical and histological preparation areas encompassing routine histology, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, auto-radiography, micro-radiography, and a variety of gross and microscopic vascular injection techniques. Current research areas include biochemistry, muscle physiology, physiology, articular cartilage and bone biomechanics and growth, motor analysis and motor function.
