Academic Profile

Dr. Ball is an orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in joint reconstruction and a memeber of the Joint and Cartilage Center at UCSD.  He grew up in Orange County, CA and graduated from UC Santa Barbara.  He went to medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where he graduated Cum Laude.  Dr Ball completed his orthopaedic residency at UC San Diego and his fellowship in Joint Reconstruction at Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles.

Dr Ball specializes in joint replacement surgery for both the hip and knee.  He uses minimally invasive approaches that facilitate reduced complication rates and faster recovery.  He also specializes in salvage reconstruction for failed joint replacements.

He has specialized training and expertise in hip resurfacing surgery, a technique that is used to preserve the hip bone, allowing younger patients with good bone quality to resume high levels of activity such as surfing, skiing, basketball, running, etc.

Dr Ball has published a number of articles in orthopaedic journals on the subjects of hip resurfacing, cartilage tissue engineering and osteochondral allografts.  He has been honored with awards for clinical and basic science research.  Dr Ball is currently studying the effects of hip replacement on the muscles surrounding the hip, to optimize post-operative muscle function and recovery.  He is also doing research to understand the underlying mechanism of complications from metal-on-metal implants to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspected reactions.  Dr Ball is a regional expert on this topic and is frequently consulted by surgeons on adverse reactions to hardware used for joint replacement surgery.

Dr Ball was named a Top Doctor in Orthopaedic Surgery by the San Diego Medical Society in both 2009 and 2010.  He was also honored as a San Diego Health Care Champion finalist in the San Diego Business Journal in 2010.

"We're unique in our global care of the patient.  By that I mean we take the time to help patients decide what is the best surgery for them, use minimally invasive surgical techniques and advanced anesthetic pain management, provide top nursing and physical therapy care on the floor and allow for open communication with our medical team.  Patients get their phone calls returned and paperwork filled our promptly.  I think we've put together a seamless package of service from the moment a patient enters our office until s/he goes home.  I want patients to go through this anxious period of time painlessly and smoothly, with as little psychological stress as possible, and the full comfort of knowing they're in expert hands.  My ultimate goal for my patients is their rapid return to a high quality of life."

Dr Ball is married, has two children, and enjoys surfing, skiing and travel.
