Academic Profile

Dr Lee specializes in degenerative spinal diseases (lumbar stenosis, herniated disk, cervical myelopathy, neck pain, back pain), adult spinal deformity (scoliosis, kyphosis) and minimally invasive spine surgery (kyphoplasty, minimally invasive fusion, X-STOP implants for lumbar spinal stenosis).  In 2009 he won the Patient's Choice Award based on consumer and peer reviews through the Vitals website.  This reflects not only his clinical and surgical skills, but his dedication to patients.

During his fellowship at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, he assisted on the first disc replacement performed there.  Dr Lee also performed the first X-STOP spinal surgeries at UCSD.  During  his residency at UCLA, he treated athletes from the intercollegiate football and basketball teams.

His main research interests are in disc regeneration and minimally invasive cervical fusions.  Dr Lee's past research includes work on bone morphogenetic proteins (BPM) and also gene therapy.

Dr Lee is active in the Head North Foundation, a charitable organization founded to help spinal cord patients receive needed treatment, rehabilitation and home assistance.

Dr Lee played football and basketball in high school and stays in shape through running and working out at the gym.
