Spine Surgery Fellowship

About the Fellowship

Primary responsibilities at the UC San Diego Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) are integral components of the spine fellowship program at UC San Diego. This is a high-volume, comprehensive program treating various spinal disorders, including degenerative, traumatic, infectious, adult deformity and oncologic conditions.

Major open reconstructions, as well as computer-assisted minimally invasive surgeries, are key strengths of the program. Independent clinical responsibilities, both in the OR and on the wards/clinic are attained in a graduated fashion. The VAMC offers a collaborative spine program, where both neurosurgery and orthopedic spine surgery work together as a cohesive team. The spine fellow oversees this service, allowing for increased autonomy.

The fellows are expected to participate in research and resident education. Protected time for research is provided. Cases are presented and discussed weekly at the Friday spine conference. A full-time clinical research coordinator facilitates ongoing clinical trials. Our advanced spine surgical training center (SSEW) hosts regular labs (cadaveric and large animal) for specialized techniques.
